Axis, the operating layer for the front desk of independent outpatient clinics, is joining Pledge 1%, a global community of companies that build social impact into their business from the start. Axis is committing three of the four available pledge categories: 1% of profit, 1% of product, and 1% of employee time. All three commitments are directed toward expanding healthcare access for clinics serving underserved communities.
Most companies formalize social impact after they reach scale. Axis is doing it from the start. The reason: healthcare access is not a milestone to hit later. It is a starting condition. The clinics Axis is built for — independent practices losing ground to operational friction — are not abstract problems. They are real owners working twelve-hour days because the front desk cannot keep up with the phones. The same problem, sharper, is what federally qualified health centers, rural primary care practices, free clinics, and tribal health clinics face every day. Axis exists to close that gap.
01What the pledge means in practice.
Of Product
Axis will provide free or substantially discounted access to Ava, our voice and SMS operating layer, for clinics serving underserved communities. Eligible practices include federally qualified health centers, free clinics, rural primary care practices, and tribal health clinics that meet specific access criteria. As Axis scales, the capacity reserved for these practices scales with it.
Of Profit
Once Axis is profitable, 1% of annual profit will fund partnerships with healthcare access organizations and direct grants to independent practices extending services to populations that would not otherwise receive them.
Of Employee Time
The Axis team commits 1% of work time to community service inside the healthcare access movement. This includes mentoring early-stage healthcare founders, contributing to open work that improves operational infrastructure for independent practices, and volunteering with healthcare equity organizations.
02Why now.
Companies that delay committing to social impact until after they reach scale often find it harder to integrate mission into a culture already shaped by other priorities. Axis is putting healthcare access alongside engineering, product, and revenue from day one, not as a later add-on.
The wider mission is straightforward. Independent practices should not need a corporate operations team to keep their chairs full and their patients engaged. Underserved practices should not need either of those, and a budget besides. The same operating layer that helps a commercial dental practice in suburban California recover six figures of lost revenue can help a rural FQHC keep its calendar full of the preventive visits that keep its community healthy. That symmetry is the case for committing both audiences early.
